Social Responsibility is a major focus at Outward Bound Hong Kong.
OBHK is involved in a number of charitable works, delivering on its mission statement:
'to help people discover and develop their potential to care for themselves, others and the world around them'.
The ethos at Outward Bound shines through its works with the disadvantaged and those seeking to make a change in their lives.
Tailor-made courses are developed to address specific needs through challenge, adventure and self-empowerment.
Mother’s Choice is an organization which provides and promotes loving, nurturing care for babies and children needing permanent homes, and for single girls and their families facing crisis pregnancies.
OBHK is going to work with Mother’s Choice to run a pilot programme. The specific programme is an 8-day journey programme for young women who have faced a crisis pregnancy or abortion to experience adventure, challenge and enjoy the beauty of the environment. Throughout the journey, participants are given the opportunity to explore their potential and go beyond their own perceived limitations. Therefore, they can expand their capabilities and gain a new perspective of self. They will return home with a renewed sense of strength, competency and an ability to make strong decisions for themselves.
This pilot project commenced in 2006 when the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust kindly provided funding. Since then, there have been 20 courses run by OBHK and 218 youth aged from 16 to 21 have participated in this 18-day programme.
These young offenders have all “graduated” from Correctional Services Department institutions. The project aimed to train young people of Hong Kong that have been in detention, through developing their self-awareness, self-management and interpersonal skills and to break the cycle of recidivism and become part of a constructive community again.
After this two-year pilot project was completed, OBHK has received other generous funding to allow this project to continue for the youth at risk in society. The beneficial organizations are: Christian Zheng Sheng College, St. Stephen’s Society and Operation Dawn Hong Kong. They are organizations operating drug rehabilitation programmes for both youth and adults in Hong Kong.
Hong Chi is dedicated to quality service in educating, training and empowering people with intellectual disabilities and their families and to improve services on a continuous basis.
OBHK provides personal development courses in partnership with Hong Chi in the belief that everyone should have a fair opportunity to grow. OBHK offers tailor-made 3-day programmes that provides them with the opportunity to go beyond their limitation and develop their own potential.
