The course leaving Hong Kong will begin at our Tai Mong Tsai base. “Spirit of Outward Bound” will sail for the Philippines, probably calling at Subic Bay before arriving at Puerto Galera where you will undertake a short expedition into the remote hills of Mindoro, aided by local Indian guides. You will then depart for Manila and fly back to Hong Kong.
Participants joining the Philippines – Hong Kong voyage will meet the ship in Puerto Galera. After a short expedition the ship will sail for Subic Bay and Hong Kong, arriving back at our base in Tai Mong Tsai where the course will be completed.
Whether you join the ship in Hong Kong or the Philippines, you will receive professional training in safety, sail-handling, steering and navigation before you take the ship to sea.
The highlight of both courses is the crossing of the South China Sea. This is a 500-mile offshore passage across a true wilderness. The South China Sea can be rough. It can also be very beautiful. Apart from your crewmates, your only companions will be seabirds, dolphins if you are lucky (and we usually are), and fellow seamen on the occasional merchant ship or fishing boat.
You will be guided on this adventure by our professional crew and Outward Bound instructors. Throughout both courses our instructors will facilitate review sessions and discussions to allow you to consolidate the lessons you learn about yourself and others, and to apply these insights to your daily life.
Note: participants will be required to attend a briefing session at our Tai Mong Tsai centre before these courses start.
