The following is a list of essential equipment you need to bring on your five day guided walk. It is divided into clothing and footwear for walking and those for use in the lodges.

For Walking:

We only advise taking one set of clothing to walk in, the more that is taken, the more that must be carried. All of our lodges have hand washing and drying facilities so clothing can be washed and dried overnight.

Walking boots or sturdy shoes Broken in, preferably with ankle support. We advise that the boot condition is checked prior to coming to the pretrack briefing. Please also ensure that they are clean when coming through customs in New Zealand.
Merino wool or polypropylene thermal underwear (top and bottom). Fundamental clothing that can be worn either as a base layer or as a single layer.
Polar fleece or merino wool jacket. An ideal outer layer in cold weather. Available for purchase in an assortment of weights and colours.
Micro fleece or merino wool long-sleeved top. Lightweight, warm and quick-drying, this is an ideal layer to be worn on top of thermal underwear. Available for purchase in an assortment of weights and colours.
T-shirt. Ideal for fine weather. Available for purchase in a selection of customised styles.
Sunhat, warm hat, gloves. Be prepared for sun and cold. Large range available for purchase.
Shorts/walking trousers. Fast drying shorts or trousers (NOT JEANS).
Two pairs of merino wool or thermal socks. Main consideration is warmth and comfort.
Sunscreen, insect repellent, water bottle and camera. The essentials that go without saying.

For Evenings:

Shirt
Trousers, shirt or track pants
Underwear ¡V two sets
Sandals or lightweight shoes
Pyjamas or night wear
Handkerchiefs
Toilet requisites (towels, soap, shampoo & conditioner are provided)

Optional items you may want to include are a swimsuit, spare laces, journal and second skin for blisters.

We do not recommend you walk in cotton garments, jeans or silk thermals: perspiration means you are likely to feel damp and cold even inside the best raincoat.

We suggest you put all your clothing in plastic bags inside your pack liner for added rain protection. Keep your pack as light as possible while still taking the essentials. Remember hand laundry facilities are available in the lodges and a lighter pack will enhance your experience.
