safety

There is no compromise on safety at Outward Bound Hong Kong.

At Outward Bound Hong Kong, we pride ourselves on our world class safety policies and practices developed from almost 40 years of experience through constant monitoring and review.

Outward Bound has set the benchmark for wilderness safety throughout Asia throughout this time, and continues to lead this exciting and dynamic field.

At Outward Bound Hong Kong, we realise that there are inherent risks in the activities we undertake and in the environments in which we undertake them. In order to minimise incident occurence, we employ comprehensive Risk Management Strategies through our highly trained and specialised staff.

Field Operations

We have a robust safety network in the field, which includes mobile phone, VHF, 2 way radio and satellite phone coverage (depending on the location). Weather conditions are continually monitored by staff.

Our group size is limited to 12 participants per instructor to ensure effective safety management.

We have a written emergency management plan to cover all contingencies in the field.

Safety Systems

We continually strive to maintain international best practice. At OBHK we aim to maintain a quarter of our instructors as internationals so we ensure a steady link with international standards. We also network and collaborate extensively with international partners.

Key safety Personnel

Our key personnel remain at the forefront of wilderness safety, and regularly present at international outdoor conferences on wilderness safety.

They are regularly invited to countries around the world to conduct safety and programme reviews at other outdoor organisations. For example, within the last five years, key personnel have travelled to Spain, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Indonesia and the USA to conduct these professional reviews.

All our equipment is continually maintained and inspected to first class standards in line with our safety and regulatory policies and those of the laws of Hong Kong. Our Challenge Ropes Course is inspected anually by an external auditor, the Spirit of Outward Bound undergoes an anual maritime survey and our ketches undergo quarterly inspections.

OBHK has a dedicated Safety Manager and an external Safety Committee. We have maintained an active external Safety Committee since 1994, which includes medical and industry experts.

Outward Bound International requires that each Outward Bound School undergoes an International Safety and Quality Reviews every 2 years.
