OBHK joined the “Jockey Club SolarCare Programme” in 2020 and had solar energy panels installed at TMT. In it's first half a year, the system has yielded 85230.77kWh, equivalent to powering 213 households, and reduced over 52,000kg of carbon dioxide, an impact equal to planting 2300 trees.
Track the impactCraftsmanship is a core value at Outward Bound. Instructors repair and maintain our gear so that we can provide our students with the best experience, and so that we can reduce waste on the planet by repairing things instead of replacing them.
See the VideoSince 2019, OBHK has actively participated in this event, and cleaned up some of very challenging coastal locations in Hong Kong. In 2020, we took an extra step to become the event partner, collaborating with other participating organisations by providing logistic support and trash removal at some remote areas.
Learn moreLeave No Trace is an important part of our programmes. Participants learn to follow the 7 principles on course, and brainstorm ways to implement no-impact practices back at home, too.
The 7 PrinciplesWith support from the Environment and Conservation Fund, in 2012, OBHK installed a composter to turn food and garden waste into fertilizer.
Every year, 5000kg of organic waste is turned into 1,000 Liters of fertilizer, which fully supports the gardening needs of Tai Mong Tsai.
Since 2011, OBHK stopped providing styrofoam lunch boxes for staff and participants. Between then and now, the organisation has saved over 10,000pcs of styrofoam lunch boxes.
Instructors living at Tai Mong Tsai basecamp carry the values of environmental sustainability in to their personal lives, too. In 2020 instructors began their own initiative to deliver recyclable materials to recycling plants. They also spent some time cleaning up trash from the coastlines near our basecamp.
