This 18 day course is for youth aged 15-19 who are in a transitional period in their life and looking to better prepare themselves for their futures. This course is an unusually powerful and valuable experience for these youth, with extended solo experiences for deep reflection and a wide range of powerful facilitated learning opportunities to help build and shape values. This 18 day journey takes place as an uninterrupted journey-based expedition camping in different locations each night and Outward Bound recognizes that these extended wilderness courses can provide a lifelong reference point with profound meaning for people from Hong Kong. These courses are subsidized by Outward Bound bursaries to make them available to low income youth, and selection is based on merit.
In recent years at Outward Bound, one of the most difficult challenges for young people is trying to break free of the constant rules of smartphone and social media. For all Outward Bound programmes, participants are not allowed to bring technology but encouraged to communicate with people face-to-face. It was a bit uneasy for them on the first few days of the journey.
They claimed to feel phantom phone vibrations in their pockets, but their day-to-day was filled with adventure and tangible accomplishments like rock climbing, kayaking and hiking on rainy days. They had never had those enjoyable moments with friends and deeply connected to nature like that before. Choosing to invest time in oneself, while truly unplugged, allow these young people to learn what they can and cannot live without, revealing more of what’s most important to them in their lives.
In my mind when I joined this course, I thought it would be physically and mentally challenging. I found a lot of challenges, and the most important one is to communicate. Since we all play leader roles outside, and we have a lot a lot of opinions. But unfortunately we don't have time to fully fix the problem. Next time i'm working in a group I'll make sure that doesn't happen again. I would like to thank everyone in this team to accept me who for I am. I found a second goal is to be able to work in work in every single team no matter how hard it is.
