Hi Guys, welcome to Ivan and Thomas day 5 sailing blog.
Today, we all woke up at 0730 and had breakfast on the boat - huge muffins like size of a fist~, then went into busy work mode to prepare the boat for sail off! As our next destination is Hua Lian and then around the island back to Kaohsiung, which means we will face the merciless sea of the Pacific Ocean, where we shall embrace our toughest challenge…… sea sickness, crazy weather and rough sea state.
All of us are mentally and physically prepared for it, and we can’t wait to sail off as soon as possible. Amelia even brought us an extra pair of eyes and hands on board so we can reach our next destination faster (she bought a whole chicken on board, from Costco, hahahahaha).
Yeah, back to the serious stuff, so we anticipated the first half of day 5 to be chill, and second half to be really rough, like with 30 knots of wind, perhaps we can push spirit to 15 knots of speed?? We will see~ As we will be out of the no wind zone, where wine is blocked by the Taiwanese mountains. Typo,…… Wind. Hahaha
The first day ended up being smooth at the beginning like we thought but ended up with wind speed picking up quite fast and us reaching our fastest sailing speeds yet, which sadly meant that most of us got very very wet and cold while putting the yankee up and down. It’s like swimming in the a mini ocean swimming pool at some moments, even so that Thomas’ life jacket AIS tracker light kept going off since it was so set!
During the past few days while sailing, We’ve been thinking and reflecting a lot about everything. From family, doggies, person you love, life, friends etc. Although we care about and love them very much, but we also feel small and powerless while sailing in the open sea, with no connection with the outside world. The only thing we can do is miss them, thinking about how to treat them better when we get back. And make a wish whenever we see a shooting stars. So far, we’ve seen 7 shooting stars! So, we made a tons of wishes, kekeke. But we’re not `gonna let you guys know what I wished for
Before I (Ivan) joined this expedition program, I know a famous life quote of “You can’t change the wind, but you can adjust your sail”. And now, this reminds me of how I should fit in this world in the right way. By thinking about this over and over again, really gives me courage to make an impact to this world I love, how to make it a better place for us and our next generation.
I (Thomas) am also reflecting a lot lately and encouraged by all the young energetic people on this boat with all their different life stories and experiences. Even though I am (sadly) the oldest person on the boat, I actually have learned a lot from everyone and am thankful for this special opportunity disconnected from the outside world and only connected by us and nature.
We know this blog sounds very emotional, and with no jokes, which doesn’t suit our / stktukyukuyyhstyle at all. But I’m being “DAD” serious, hahaha. (To the person editing and translating this blog, you are not allowed to edit this joke! Kekeke with evil smile )
Oh yeah, and one more thing. We’ve heard more than couple times that my crewmate mentioned, they believe there some kind of magic in Outward Bound. You can find your life goal here, meaning of life, people that understand you, person that you like etc. And I’m starting to feel the magic slowly becoming real.
we better stop typing now before this becomes too emotional!
Until next time! Peace out!
